工作学习 / 求学深造 / 向大家请教个语法问题：Child killers Marcia and Tony Dooley should have received longer jail sentences,and would have were it not for a law that allows adults to physically punish children. 我知道这是个虚拟从句。不过would have were it... 感觉好象不对劲。 这是我从Toronto Star 上看到的。请帮忙解释。谢谢！

对不起，我没有看到逗号。如果有“，”，前面should是情态。后面是虚拟。were it not for。。是虚拟倒装条件，would have 是主句。

根据你的意思：(Child killers...would have) 是主句，were it not for ...是从句。但是没有动词。所以我想你第一次的回复意思是对的。Child killers... should have received ... , and (child killers... 省略)would have (received longer jail... 省略) were it not for... （Child killers 应该并将接受。。。) 你说这样理解对吗？

were it not ....前省略了一个if, 所以，我认为应该是这样理解----如果不是法律允许成人给小孩精神上的惩罚，那么，杀害小孩的凶手March and Tony Dooley本应该也被判更长的刑期。那个would have 我认为后面省略了received longer jail sentences,是前门的虚拟语气的重复，起一个强调作用。
