thx to those who responded. i spent the time to download latest freebsd and installed it on my newly bought laptop (old freebsd laptop died). everything was hunky dory afterwards. sorry i was just panicking ;)

谢谢。vm不是问题，问题是我原有的CD上系统都太老，不认新手提上的网卡。我最后只好耐心下载新版本系统，多花点时间工作晚点，问题就都解决了。另外，谢谢marse提供Solaris，我要的是手提电脑可以带着用的，而且必须是root. :)
