yes, RAID (3ware) on 4 seria ATA drives (Maxtor). The system breaks down after every month or so.We could successully rebuild the array, When the system is in the degraded state, it still appears normal, but just without the parity (redundancy). Is this normal ?

Although I know it's possible, but I never tried it out.If the purpose is to buld a fault-tolerent system, that is not something you want to make it in-house. OK, you can just buy a enclsure, a scsi RAID controller and copatible spare drives from one of the trusted big server company.Unless you really need TB level online stroage, it CAN BE cheaper and much, much , ... more solid than the one you make with 3Ware(?) card and Maxtor drive. -dotod(Hewllet Greger); 2005-4-11 {156} (#2233299@0)

2、如果硬盘没有坏，每次有盘degraded,应该可以在bios或者gui里面直接重建raid5,不必重装
3、如果经常出现这种情况并且确信硬盘没坏，并且你操作正确，可以怀疑你的raid卡与硬盘兼容性有问题，或者软件有问题，直接跟卡的生产厂商联系，寻求技术支持。你的卡是哪个公司的产品？ -hippo(最帅的河马); 2005-4-11 {324} (#2233262@0)

谢谢！硬盘没坏，but we updated the firmware on each of the drives after talking to Maxtor people, that seemed to have worked. Beofre that, the RAID broke down after 3-5 days.每次硬盘degraded,都是不同的盘。The RAID controller is from 3ware, and the motherboard is from TYAN. 每次都是进入SuSE Yast system to rebuild the RAID, which is straight but slow.
I called 3ware, Maxtro many times, and have done everything they told us. I even emailed the error log to the technician at 3ware. -sdyxz(sdyxz); 2005-4-11 {309} (#2233276@0)

首先把那块老downgrade的HD摘掉，看看三块盘RAID5还坏不坏，很有可能就是RAID卡和硬盘的兼容性问题。可以找那家店给换一个别的型号的RAID卡或硬盘。 -ivanliuxin(Ivan); 2005-4-11 (#2235298@0)

download diag program from maxtor and test each hd thoroughly. Usually it is the problem with the hard drive.if you are using the raid 5 function from the card, you can configure it as JBOD and use soft raid from linux. It is pretty stable for us. -packet(hello); 2005-4-21 {138} (#2247195@0)
