Passport is always the best when going outside Canada. However, it is currently not required if you travel on land (driving) to US. A citizenship card is good enough to prove your citizenship.

Canada born citizens do not have citizenship card, but birth certificate instead.

Expired passport will be o.k. for board crossing.
