My understanding:If you are going to use commercial EDI, the EDI is standardized. The names of the EDI files are meaningful (eg. EDI810 = Commercial Invoice, EDI945 = Warehouse Shipping Advice) and the formats are fixed. However, you still can map the EDI field to your data element.
You could find the standard by searching 'EDI X12'
Other than that, you can define your file by youself, as long as your partener can correctly translate it.
