I did have experience having free food in temples/ashrams.
People sat on the floor, with a plate, and a cup for water. Ate with fingers. I did in the same way.
Haven't seen anyone eat directly from the floor.
In some restaurant, the waiter lays a sheet of banana leaf on the table, then the food is on top of the leaf. I like it.
BTW, Indians like Chinese very much. Average Indians would ask to take selfies with me, as if I'm a monkey. 😁
