wrong!, RRSP u've purchased in-between Jan,1st,2003-Mar,3rd,2003 can be counted as RRSP of 2002 or RRSP of 2003 depends on your own mind.

hmm, so how do they calculate if the contribution exceeds the limit. i.e. buy $5000 over the limit for 2002, and then tell them it's for 2003 to avoid penalty?

sigh...a dumb 牛牛, it's depends on how you fill your income tax return, not exactly how much your baught( by "not exactly" i mean you can only over-buy about $2000 over your limitation).

so, if one is to exceed the limit by more than $2000, it is possible to not claim it for the 2002 tax return (and say it is for 2003 in the event of an audit)?

The purchase between Jan 1 to Mar 2 is counted as contribution for 2002, unless you ask your RRSP trust to make it for 2003.If by Mar 2, all your contribution is 2000 more than all you are allowed to contribute (in your NOA), there will be a 1% monthly penalty against you. So, be sure you are doing it right.

No, you are the one to say it is for year 2002 or 2003, you can check with your bank/financial officers about this again.

Isn't this what I was trying to say in the above message? You do have a choice. And you should not include the form you receive from your bank when you claim it in schedule 7.

If you take it as contribution of 2002, be sure that total amount of 2002 will not exceed the limit more than 2000. Oherwise simply take it as contribution of 2003.
