Yes you can. It is called CAREGIVER amount on your tax return form. Check the guide. BTW, it is tax payer's right to claim, not "take advantage".

No. They should be "premanent residents".

Visitors OK if they lived here longer than 6 months. The key word is resident of Canada, not necessary PERMANENT resident.I recall the definition of resident is anyone who lived here >=183 days in a tax year. Can someone go check it again and reply to us?
Many thanks.

You can't...Before 2001, you were able to claim caregiver amount for them but this policy already changed last year, so canadian government is studying how to fill some "BLack Hole". Check here:

"your or your spouse or common-law partner's brother, sister, niece, nephew, aunt, uncle, parent, or grandparent who was resident in Canada. You cannot claim this amount for a person who was only visiting you."

Don't try it, unless they are PR AND file their tax return.1. If they are not PR. no hope.
2. even they are PR, but if they don't file their own tax return. no hope.

Not correct...If your parents are immigrants, over 65 years old and lived with you, you can claim Caregiver Amount for them.
