Ontario’s Public Safety Regulator
Issues Warning About Phony Inspectors
December 10, 2012
Eco Energy Home Services Served with Cease and Desist Order for Impersonating TSSA Inspectors
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Toronto, ON, December 10, 2012) – The Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA), Ontario’s public safety regulator, is warning homeowners to beware of door-to-door salespeople selling furnaces, water heaters and energy services wearing TSSA insignia and misrepresenting themselves as inspectors.
TSSA recently issued a cease and desist order to Markham-based Eco Energy Home Services Inc. for illegal use of TSSA’s logo and brand identity on their sales staff’s uniforms. TSSA is now conducting a thorough review of the company’s registration as a certified fuels contractor to ensure its business practices are in compliance with Ontario’s safety regulations.
TSSA inspectors do not sell products or services and do not go door-to-door. TSSA inspectors only attend residential locations as part of an official incident investigation or at the request of homeowners.
“If there is any doubt about the identity of a TSSA inspector, homeowners should either request to see the inspector’s Provincial Offences Officer badge or contact TSSA for verification of the inspector’s name and badge number,” said TSSA Director of Fuels Safety John Marshall.
“Any salespeople who misrepresent themselves as a TSSA inspector by either wearing or showing a TSSA logo or claiming to be from TSSA should be reported to TSSA,” added Marshall.
It is unlawful to use TSSA’s logo for any print, branding or electronic purposes. It is protected by applicable trademark, copyright and other intellectual property laws. Unauthorized use may cause confusion or public deception and depreciate TSSA’s goodwill as Ontario’s public safety regulator.
“Any unauthorized use of TSSA’s brand identity or logo by any company or contractor, including those selling fuel-fired appliances or energy services, will immediately face an aggressive legal response,” said TSSA Vice President and General Counsel Tom Ayres.
