I have some distant relatives

graduated from
GuangZhou ZhongShan and then managed to continue their career as MDs after they came here. But definitely, they made a lot efforts to accomplish this. I don't know exactly
much details about their experience. I'm an engieeering guy and unfortunately almost all my friends are in the industry/academic fields. However, I think you still have chances to stay in the medical career although it's not as easy as switching to the IT-related fields. Sorry for not being able to provide more useful information. BTW, I also came from Hangzhou and am really home-sick these days while browsing the web-pages introducing the magnificent scenes, delicious foods and colorful lifes at Hangzhou. Anyway, good luck to you.

        • It's relatively hard to
continue practicing as a MD right after you
          move here. Re-entering Medical Schools
or taking MD qualification exams takes long
and is very costy. However, there are so many
possibilities here if you try hard. You will not
          be regretful later.
          • hi,ali,do u have much information and experience about it?can u tell more?thanks for your help.

              • Hi,ali,thanks for your
answering me.But I felt a little surprised when I knew u just came from hanzhou. Now I'm living beside the Westlake,it's really beautiful !I think it's possible for u to come here and have a good look. Sorry, here I have another question need your help:is it easy to switch to the IT-related fields?Could u answer me this time? Thanks!
                • It depends on your background.
本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛With 理工 background, it may take around 2 years to get a Master's degree in Information Science, Electrical Engineering (computer and network related areas). Otherwise, it may take 3~5 years to start as a special student in the undergraduate program (you only need to make up a part of the regular course requirement since you have already received university education in China, courses like Physics, Chemistry etc. can be waived.) It may be 10~15 courses before you can get a bachelor degree (approximately 4 courses each term) and it may take 2 years to do that.

At this point, you may readily find a job in the IT area. If you decide to pursue further education, go for the graduate program and you will definitely be able to complete it in less than 2 years. Normally, the minimum requirement is approsimately 10 courses + 1 project with report for non-thesis options. For those select the thesis option, it about 5~6 courses + 1 thesis, which takes about 1 year.

It is also possible to attend a college (there are many of them in the Metro-Toronto region). In a college, they teach more practical stuff compared to the universities. The time frame is also approximately 3 years but it is relatively easy for people with little 理工 background or prefer easy life.

I wrote these according to the information from my friends in the recent years. Since I came here many years ago - the last time I went back to Hangzhou is in 95, I do not have many "new immigrant" friends. Therefore, I don't have the first-hand information of how they view this issue.

My home in Hangzhou is in 拱墅区 , a little bit far from the lake. You live in 湖滨 ? It's the best place in the world (at least in Hangzhou).

                  • When I graduated from
the university several years ago ,I decided to live in hangzhou forever. Now it becomes beautiful more and more, but my feeling has changed.I think the first thing for me is to get a TOFEL score,(is GRE necessary?),then study by myself about the basic course of science and engineer, later go to the Canada university and get some bachelor or master degree...So fine! Is it possible?I will laught at myself and really feel suspicious .In addision, I think we can also communicate with each other about something else by e-mail,do u think so?At last, sincerely thank u!
                    • GRE is not always required. A TOEFL over
600 is most helpful. If you are well prepared in science and engineering, you may readily get admitted into Information/Computer science/Engineering programs. My feeling is that Canada does give you the opportunity to do what you want to do. Your email will be welcome.
