Just to share some thoughts since I am in a similar situation.

本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛1. think over your plan again if it's not too late, since you don't see yourself as an agressive businesswoman. Your English is quite good, it wouldn't be difficult for you to find an office job even without MBA.
2. if finally you still want to do MBA, from what you said in your posting, I would suggest U of Calgary. after all, when a company recruits, what counts the most is the person-you. the interests that you can spark don't depend on your school, but on you.
3. your financial situation is another reason why I think U of Calg is a better choice for you.

ps: I must add something to my first point. You'd better make sure what you really want in your job. I used to think I would be content with a stable even boring and low-paid job. But I found I was wrong. Now that I will try to change, I regret I didn't start it earlier.

    本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛i got the offer from Rotman but i also received 10,000 scholoarship from u of Calgary. i am in calgary right now and my husband is a network administrator. i am not quite sure whether toronto will be good for him to look for a job. it's said the unemployment rate in calgary is the lowest in canada. anyway, his contract is going to end by this month. we have no friends in toronto so from hearing 90% new immigrants will land in toronto, i am kind of concerned it will be tough for him to land a job.

    Rotman is expensive and there is no scholarship for me. i tried to apply student loan in alberta but seems i have to repay the loan even i can get some. if i spend all my money on the school, do u think it may worth the value? to be frank, i have no finance background at all. holding a strong mba degree doesn't guarantee me a good job in future. certainly Uof C is not on the same tier with Rotman but it is close to one of the biggest job market in canada. living expenses here is much cheaper than in the east. moreover, i am female and just over 30. i have to think about the family plan in a few years. personally i don't see myself as an aggressive business woman.

    if i can get some need-based financial aid from Rotman, i might consider to go to toronto. do i have to wait until school starts? what is the general amount of the need-based financial aid and does everybody have the chance to get some? staying in calgary means a difference up to $60,000 for me. could you give me some advice?更多精彩文章及讨论，请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net

      1. From a pure MBA point of view, I think, Rotman>Calgary+$10,000 scholarship. In fact, best MBA programs do not have a lot of scholarship at all.

      2. About the question of how to justify the $60,000 cost if you choose Rotman, I think, it is really a very personally choice. If you think about long term return on investment, Rotman is probably a better choice. I mean if you choose Calgary, you may never land a 'good job'. As you mention in your posting, it maybe easier for a Rotman student to find a finance job simply because it is closest to Bay street.

      3. If you really think you are not so aggresive(since most of the female MBAs I know are aggresive women), maybe Calgary is not a bad choice. The pro side of that programs is so obvious, scholarship, cheap tuition fee, don't need to relocate, etc.

      Therefore, if I were you, I would definately choose (the stinking) Rotman.

      Since you can get an offer here before you do your MBA, chances are you can get offers after you MBA, which ever school you choose to go. You mentioned you don't have a solid backgroud in finance, my guess is that Rotman is not going to catapult you to a Bay Street position upon your graduation. (I am talking from my experience as an Ivey grad). Most likely, the job you get after Rotman will be on par with what you get after Calgary, maybe $5k or 10k better, which will be easily wiped out by the higher living expenses.

      Top notch B schools have their merits: good profs, good alumni network, better learning experience. These are difficult to translate into economic gains. But again, if you can't land a 100k job in I-Banking or consulting, the above benefits are marginal.

      Considering your family situation and your life stage, I would recommend Calgary.

      I have a friend who is studying in Rotman. Like you, she has no finanical background before. It's very painful for her to study there with so many financial courses. It really made her depressive. Calgary is not bad. One of my friend will go there this Sept. But I hope you think about it carefully and make a good decision.
