I know you are worried.
As far as I know, many students there are working as TA(teaching assistant) or RA(research assistant), or jobs within school. they are all legal.
If you get good scores in the first couple of semester, chances are you will get some financial help including scholarship, RA offer, even fellowship.
But you will have difficulties to get a student visa because of your situation, unless you could borrow some money showing on the bank statement first.
Anyway it's not easy, but don't give up too early.
