to see what is popular and what is hated. We can not just do something in order to add to the number. If it is something that everyone likes every year, then add one or two extra; If it is something we all hate, eliminate them... I know variety is a merit. But having variety at the sacrifice of good ones is a sin. Singing, for example, can be exciting if it is in the right context, e.g. with dancing, instruments, in a playful way.... .. It might be good to avoid the "professional" way of doing it, for no matter how good you are, you can never avoid being called an amateur. ..
Sometimes doing it the opposite way (as oppose to "the professional" way) is the best way. That is why Steven Chow is so popular. Anyone can be a singer in his movies. There is nothing serious, meaningful (well, there is meaning, but not full of meaning), or "professional" there, but it is entertaining.
