In fact, many many Microsoft products' knowledge/concept come from another company, for example: MS-DOS 1.0 from Apple DOS, MS Windows 1.0 from Apple macintosh OS, MS-DOS 6.0 from DR-DOS, Windows server from Novell Server and Unix server, PDC/BDC/Active Directory from Novell's NDS, C# from Java, .NET from P-Pascal.....,
Of course, Microsoft is a great Co. in IT industry.

我们公司有个核心的windows2003文件服务器，业务时间有约300台机器要访问这台服务器，用map drive方式。公司网络是switch堆出来的，flat network,没有划分vlan, 骨干是gbps。

用户反映访问文件服务器很慢，打开一个doc文件要挺长时间的。但是ping却很快，没有latency, 没有drop packet。

有点怀疑是windows的netbios的问题，请教有经验的大虾, 是不是连接数到了一定程度，netbios就会成为瓶颈?有什么办法能提高性能？

I never use windows as file server. You can setup some testing box like netware or Unix samba box as your file server. Their performance and security are much better than windows. -bugfree(BugFree); 2005-10-25 {354} (#2573139@0)
From your data, I do not think it is the network issue. One word file is not a big deal ;)
So I do not think it can help you a lot to create vlan and restructure the switch network. The correct way to do it is to find a good file server. We have some file server using FreeBSD, their performance is very good. You can have a try

例如：1）现在我是用veritas做备份，veritas是基于windows平台的，如果用freebsd，要用什么工具呢？也可以网络来备份，那应该没有本地备份来得快吧。现在的备份量是full backup 400GB.
2)现在用户都是map到服务器上的，如果是freebsd，还能用map方式吗？
3）现在用户是通过active directory来管理的，不知如何和freebsd上的用户，组来对应。听说samba能做到freebsd上的用户映射到windows上，是吗？
