Can you install a NetScape on your machine?
If you do, you can download a trial version of NJstar from www.njstar.com, and then you can view and type into chinese. ( I meet the similar prob as you)

I don't know why, but it seems that NJStar only works fine with NS but cause trouble with IE.
If this way works, let me know, I can email you a full copy of NJStar.

You may also try to log into your own machine( domain-> choose your own machine name) to see if then you can download and install the chinese font for IE.

First download an IE, and then go to MS Windows Update. You should be able to find something like "IE Simplified Input Module". If I am not wrong, you will also be able to display Chinese in netscape. -bloor(不老); 2001-8-3 (#154604@0)

After installing IE, just try to install GLOBAL IME(for simplified Chinese) from microsoft download center. Then you can read and write Chinese. -zjoy(Joy); 2001-8-3 (#154706@0)
